The Six Signs Your System Needs Replacing

The tank is leaking
A leak from the tank itself, rather than from a valve or fitting, usually means the tank has corroded internally. Valve leaks can often be repaired. Tank leaks generally can’t.
It’s reached the end of its lifespan
Most systems last 8 to 12 years. Perth’s water is relatively hard in some suburbs, which can accelerate wear on internal components.
Cold or lukewarm water
If water is coming out below your thermostat setting, the heating element may be failing. Try adjusting the thermostat first, then call a plumber if there’s no change.
Rust in the water
Usually means the tank is corroding internally, though it’s worth confirming this isn’t a galvanised piping issue elsewhere in the house first.
Unusual noise
Rumbling or popping sounds usually mean sediment has built up inside the tank, which can corrode the heating element over time.
Rising energy bills
An ageing system loses efficiency gradually. A creeping bill increase with no change in usage often points to a system working harder than it should.

What to Do If You’ve Spotted One of These Signs

None of these signs on their own always means an immediate replacement, but if you’re seeing two or more together, it’s worth having the system properly assessed rather than waiting for it to fail completely, usually at the least convenient time.
